Students in Mrs. LeFrancois's class at Smilie Elementary School competed in the game "Dice Dash." The overall objective of this game is physical fitness. Notice how every student is always moving/running in this game. Running is a crucial skill that students of all ages should be practicing, however at the elementary level we must disguise the running in a fun game with competition such as "Dice Dash."
When we disguise the fitness skill, RUNNING in this case, students are more likely to get excited about a task that they would otherwise not be that enthused about. Students also practiced secondary objectives such as fair play and recognition of greater than and less than.
-NOTE: (These 1st and 2nd graders played this game for 25 minutes. I got way more out of all of these students than I ever would in a school running program. There were no excuses, every student wanted to compete in this activity.)
Best,
Mr. Shackett
