-The "Jump Rope Unit" has started at both Lincoln and Monkton. The pictures below are of 3rd and 4th graders in their second day of Jump Roping. I showed the students the basic "cues" ("elbows in", "loose grip", "feet together", "bend knees", "turn jump, turn jump") to successfully turning a jump rope and jumping over it just one time. We talked about how if you want to be a skilled jumper and learn all the tricks that are out there you must first learn the basic jump. We spent an entire class and a half on just the basic jump and now students are on to learning tricks and "mini routines" with a partner. We have used "Jump Rope for Heart" skill cards and iPads (see pics below) to learn more advanced tricks and reach all of the diverse learners in their preferred learning style.
This is a very challenging, yet enjoyable unit for all students. Perseverance is key!
Best,
-Mr. Shackett
