"HornSwoggled!" A great fitness option...

By the way:  The "winning" student had 44 tickets, and 3 pieces of treasure for a total of 74 points.  Read on to see what an accomplishment this is for a fourth grader!!!

-"HornSwoggled" is a wonderful fitness option for students.  You will see in the above video Brewster Pierce 4th graders running laps around the gym.  However, what is so cool about this is that I have not forced them or made them run any of these laps.

In this game you simply have to earn 1 ticket (to earn one ticket you must run one lap) to get onto the Brewster Pierce Pirate Ship and then make it through the 3 challenging levels (each level is a hula hoop with 2 dice inside each.  1 student grabs a dice and another student grabs the other and they face off rolling the dice to see who gets the higher number.  The student that gets the higher number moves on to the next level and the student that rolls the lower moves back 1 level.  If a student loses at level 1, they are kicked off the ship (we call it walking the plank :) ) and must earn another ticket (1 lap) to get back on the ship).  If a student makes it through the three levels she can grab one piece of treasure (a wristband and wear it somewhere on her person to show how successful she is).

Note:  At the end of the game we get in our own space and see who has the most treasure/tickets.  As a CHOICE, some students chose to run laps the entire time and not "board the ship," remember each lap equals one ticket earned.  We decided before the game as a class that 1 piece of treasure (wristband) is worth what 10 tickets is worth.  So it takes 10 laps to earn what 1 piece of treasure is worth!!!  Its a tough decision: board the boat and ROLL your way to treasure, or RUN as fast as you can as many times as you can and defeat the pirates with the most tickets!!!!

Mr. Shackett's side note:  "no students have been FORCED to RUN, every student seen running is choosing to run.  They were FOCUSED on the END RESULT (which student will have the most points??? not so much focused on the RUNNING...  You see, we can make fitness FUN for all with a little trick, and a little bit of choice!"
